Frequently Asked Questions: Choosing a Specific Therapist

I have found a therapist I'd like to see. How do I book with them?

Our therapist directory includes all therapists who use the HelloSelf platform. This includes:

  • HelloSelf therapists accepting referrals.
  • Independent therapists who run their own private practice and use HelloSelf to deliver online sessions.

If the therapist runs their own private practice, their individual website or contact details will be listed on their profile. In these cases, you should contact them directly, and you do not need to complete a HelloSelf self-referral form.

Why can't I book an appointment with every therapist?

Our directory shows all therapists, including those who may not currently be available. This means you may see therapists who are:

  • At full capacity.
  • On long-term leave.
  • Temporarily not accepting new clients.

Their profile may still appear in the directory even if they are unable to offer appointments at this time.

What happens if I click "Book a Session"?

Clicking Book a Session will take you to the HelloSelf self-referral form.

Once you've completed your referral, it will first be offered to your chosen therapist as a priority. If they have availability and feel they are the right clinician for your needs, they can send you an appointment offer.

What if my chosen therapist isn't available?

If your preferred therapist is unable to offer you an appointment, your referral won't be lost.

Instead, it will be made available to other suitable HelloSelf therapists who have availability and are well matched to your needs. This helps minimise delays in accessing support.

How are alternative therapist matches chosen?

Any alternative appointment offers are made using clinical reasoning. Therapists are matched based on factors such as:

  • Your presenting concerns and goals.
  • Their clinical specialisms and areas of expertise.
  • Their qualifications and experience.
  • Their alignment with BABCP guidelines and evidence-based practice where appropriate.

Our aim is to ensure you are connected with a therapist who has the most appropriate skills and experience to support your needs, while also helping you access an appointment as quickly as possible.

While we'll always try to prioritise your preferred therapist, we can't guarantee availability. Accepting an appointment with another suitably qualified therapist may help you begin treatment sooner.
