What’s the difference between a Clinical Psychologist and a CBT Therapist?

A Clinical Psychologist is a trained mental health professional with a doctorate, registered with the HCPC, who can assess and treat a wide range of mental health problems using different therapy approaches, including CBT.

A CBT Therapist has completed focused and specific training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. They are accredited with the BABCP and may come from different professional backgrounds. Many CBT Therapists also offer other therapies, such as EMDR or Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), etc.

While Clinical Psychologists have broader training and experience in a range of modalities - both they and accredited CBT Therapists can provide effective CBT. Choosing either can be a helpful step toward support and wellbeing.
